The Canary Challenge is on September 30, 2017.
Note on the date
We understand that the 2017 Canary Challenge falls on Yom Kippur. Unfortunately, due to a combination of logistical and venue requirements, along with the necessity to avoid dates for competing events, we were extremely limited when setting a date this year. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused a number of our participants.
Alternative Option: Friday Evening Ride
For those who still wish to support Canary but cannot participate on the day of the Challenge, we are holding a special Friday Evening Ride on Sept. 29. This invite-only event will feature an organized ride followed by wine and hors d’oeuvres at our founder’s home. This alternative was selected by the majority of respondents to a survey that included two other options. The survey was sent to past Canary Challenge participants.

Pre-event packet pick up for all participants will be available at the Canary Center in Palo Alto before the event. We encourage all riders to pick up their registration packets on Wednesday or Thursday for a smooth start for the event on Saturday.

If you plan to pick up a registration packet for another participant, please ensure that he or she has met the following qualifications:
Event day packet pick up will be available beginning at 6 am. We encourage the long course riders to arrive early. Check-in will be at the clearly marked pre-ride registration tents in the Village, along with breakfast and coffee, bike valet, and a bike safety check.
Remember, there is a $400 minimum fundraising requirement to participate in the Canary Challenge for adults. The fundraising requirement for children is $100. We encourage all participants to raise this amount or more before the event by fundraising online. If you have checks, please make them out to “Canary Foundation Challenge” and mail check donations to us at:

All donations must be received to pick up your registration packet. Please bring any additional donations to the event on Saturday.
If you’ve been unable to reach the minimum $400, you may settle the difference when you check in on the day of the event with a check or a credit card. If you have additional donations, you may also bring them to the event. Please do not bring cash.
Dress in layers! Especially for the longer rides, expect different weather on the coast than in Palo Alto. Remember to bring proper personal and medical identification, as well as any miscellaneous items you may need during the race or for bike repair. Helmets are required. No rider will be able to participate without a helmet.
Please note if you choose to start before 7 am, you must have a light on your bike. To ensure rider safety, all participants are required to be off the course by 5 pm.
SAG stands for support and gear. These vehicles, will be designated with Canary Challenge magnetic signs. Their purpose is to patrol the routes and assist riders who need help, whether you have broken down, are injured, or are too tired to continue.
Mechanics at the start line will be available for safety checks and last minute adjustments. They will also be at the Water Temple rest stop. Mechanics will not have supplies as handouts, but will have basic supplies for simple repairs. We recommend that you have basic repair items such as a new tube or patch kit, pump, and multi-tool.
These are valuable and talented volunteers selected based on their ability to assist riders in crisis situations. Medical volunteers will be in the SAG wagons and at each rest stop.
Directional signage will be along the road. Each turn will be preceded by a road marker and will be followed by a confirmation road marker to reassure riders that you made the correct turn. Each route has a designated color.
Five rest stops are conveniently located along the routes and will be fully stocked with gourmet snacks, water and sports drinks. Restrooms will be available at all stops.
Limited, free parking will be available directly next to the Village at Varian Medical Systems. Please follow signs to the correct parking lot.
A complimentary breakfast of fruit, pastries, bagels, an egg dish and drinks will be provided at the Village from 6 – 10 am.
Lunch at the Village begins at 11:30 am. Each participant must check-in at the post-ride registration booth when they return from their ride or walk to pick up their lunch tickets and goodie bags. You will be given two complimentary lunch tickets for two food trucks of your choice. Lunch will be served until 5 pm. Additional lunches are available for spectators to purchase. Please go to the lunch ticket booth and purchase a ticket for $10/lunch, which will be donated to the Canary Foundation. Credit card or cash is accepted.
There will be a kid zone with face painting, bounce houses, and a balloon twister. The kid zone will be open from 11:30 am – 5 pm.
The Silicon Valley Bike Coalition will provide complimentary bike valet service in the Village. The valet opens at 11 am.
